Buddha Statue Teaching Hand Carved Suar Wood 40cm

A quiet focal point for a meditation corner, hallway console or calm living space, carved in warm suar wood with the composed presence of a seated Buddha. The raised teaching hand and softly lowered gaze give the piece a thoughtful, contemplative character, while the reddish robe and pale face bring clear contrast from across the room.

Seated teaching pose

The figure sits cross-legged, with one hand raised in a teaching gesture and the other resting low across the lap.

The face is gentle and still, with closed eyes that give the statue a settled, inward-looking expression.

Carved folds in the robe catch the light, making the drapery feel sculptural rather than flat.

The warm reddish-brown finish gives the statue a rich, grounded look against pale walls, wood furniture or woven textiles.

The beaded curls, long ears and upright posture keep the iconography recognisable and respectful.

Suar wood, carved in Indonesia

This Buddha statue is hand carved from suar wood in Indonesia, using traditional Balinese tools and carving methods. The process can take weeks, and each piece comes out slightly different, with small variations in the carving, colour and surface that belong to the work of the hand.

Suar wood is valued for its weight and visible grain, giving the statue a substantial, natural presence. Here, the wood is shaped into layered robes, rounded facial features and fine hair detail, balancing earthy material with devotional form.

How to place and care for it

Place it on a stable surface where its seated shape has room to breathe: a low shelf, altar table, sideboard or quiet corner works well. Its weight gives it a steady feel, but it should still be kept away from edges.

Keep the wood indoors and away from prolonged damp. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid soaking or harsh cleaning products, as untreated or carved wood can mark when exposed to moisture.
