Five kalpas is said to be 2.16 billion years. One kalpa is said to be the amount of time it takes for a celestial maiden to descend onto a large rock once every three years, and for the friction of her feathered robe to cause the rock to disappear. For such a long time, Amida Buddha has continued to contemplate our salvation and the ideal Pure Land. The shape of the long, spiraling hair conveys to us the profound compassion and greatness of Amida Buddha. The model is the "Five Kalpa Contemplation Amida Buddha Seated Statue," a nationally important cultural property of Nara Prefecture. It is a Kamakura period work that is usually kept a secret Buddha and is carved from a single piece of cypress wood. Not only each individual spiral of hair, but also the plump contours and the youthfulness conveyed by the small mouth have been faithfully reproduced, and particular attention has been paid to the degree of peeling of the gold leaf that remains largely on the face.
